During the course of my graduate work I’ve become increasingly interested in electronic engineering. Although my knowledge is limited to what I’ve taught myself, I’ve found that it doesn’t take much to go from “that’s impossible” to “sure, I can build that”. This can mean avoiding the premium charged for a commercial product, creating a custom device that wouldn’t otherwise exist, or even developing an entirely new research tool.
Past and present projects include:
- A fishfinder-connected data logger designed to record georeferenced depths for later interpolation
- A DIY battery pack for Smith-Root backpack electrofishers
- Point-based Passive Integrated Transponder readers
